Hi Dominic
finder in tiger 10.4.8 is very slow for listing 5000 files and more in AFP mounted volume server2000+FSM
and gives incorrect result when searching some files in that AFP mounted volume (using file/find
spotlight is not findin any thing in mounted volume
if you search by command line is fast, but by using finder file /find
is slow and some times is incorrect result
this afp monuted volum is on a server 2000 with service FSM
we stoped an restated FSM service and even restart server 2000
to rebuilt the index of MacFiles
if we mount that volume in SMB listing is slow but search is correct
mac os 9 can serach correctly on that volume by Apple talk
I start to use GUI for unix locate command witch is very fast search
but the database become outof date very quickly because of file change on the sever.
Do you have any idea about how optimise the fider to make it very quick
or replase it by any thing else
Thanks

Hi haitham
Sorry for taking so long to get back Christnas and MacWorld 2007
I would really recomend moving away from AFP... AFP Does not scale up for your uses so depending on the amount of simutainus connections.
For a SMB connection (which is the way i would recomend going down) You should look at Modifying the Samba Control to only show files that users have permission to read.
The other way which is the route that i use is to use Microsoft access control Emulation

Thank you Dominic
The problem is we still need the fork files to support quark and other Applications. moving away from AFP is not option yet
and we know the version of AFP of Microsoft is old comparing with version of Mac os x. and even Microsoft recognized that thy have a problem with indexing large Mac volume.
So I create a basic Apple script with basic GUI as a front end for command unix find
and we have fast result for searching Mac Volume mounted over AFP

Fantastic
Any chance of uploading the script (after removing any authentication, domain etc) it might help someone else.
If you upload as a file only members can download the file as instead of posting the code.
