How to deploy login script

Welcome to the forum

If you use a login script from Workgroup Manager use must use $1 to get the username of the person logging in and not $USER

This would be the best way as you can then pass this value on.

When using PKGImage 1.7 to create a Netboot (NetInstall) image it does not copy over the PrivateFramework DSObjCWrappers.framework.

PKGImage 1.7.1 will be released today (3-11-08) which includes this framework

AD Authentication no Longer Working

Not sure why there is a delay. They were working fine initially. I am sitting at each system and adding the AD connection in Directory Access. Usually they would show up immediately in the AD, and I would move them to the right container, but they do not show up.

Not sure what is going on.

You can make the OD a trusted machine but to be honest i don't think its worth it. What benefits will you gain?

As for the OS X login;

The login should take between 5-10 seconds depending on how the profile (Template) is set up. Also depending on what the login is doing i.e mounting network shares? if so what is happening from the authentication side etc..

report back with what happens at login... are auto mounting shares? template custom? over wireless? etc

Can you build the entire Netboot Image on a 10.5 Client...

The Size difference that you are seeing in the /Volumes/NetInstall/System/Library/Frameworks/AppKit.framework is the Language lproj files it sounds like you have more on the client.

I will see if i have the same OS X installer DVD Build and test.

Hi Jeff

Sounds like some good ideas.

The sub-folder one will be relatively easy to add in to the code... allowing you to split up packages into groups, Microsoft, apple updates... etc...

Hi all,

Thanks for the site and the forum.....I think I will learn quite a few things here.

OK, I hope this is relevant to this area. Setting up a 10.5.2 Server for the first time, and was hoping the Wiki would be a simple setup, but has me a bit stumped so far.

1. New install, setup as Advanced.
2. Used Directory Utilty to bind it to our current AD setup, using an AD admin user creds.
3. Set the box to be an OD Master, per the manual.
4. Able to see/authenicate againast AD users/groups OK.
5. Turned on Web service and Wiki/Blog options in Server Admin.
6. Set up an OD group (Wiki Moderators) in WGM to control, and added a couple AD users and an AD group to it, enabled the web service (the default web service for the machine, only option available) for this group, and enabled Wiki for this group.

I think that is all correct, but stumbling through it for the first time, so please tell me if I missed something.

So here is the issue: I open a browser and go to machinename.local and I see the OS X Server default page, looks OK to me. I can click on Users and Groups. In Groups, I see the OD group Wiki Moderators I created with WGM. But when I click on the Group, I get a 404 error - no group with that name hosted on this server. Also....when I click on Users, there are none available.

So, can anybody shed light on whether this is......an AD bind issue, an OD config issue, or a Wiki config issue? Something else??

The problem is that I do not use the dollar sign in the share name. The share is on the MacOS X Server disk, and on the Windows user profile path I wrote \\osxserver\homes\user1.

I will try this again, though.

Standard User Printing in 10.5

Ok

This one has been bugging me for a while....I understand why apple have set the option for printing through the system prefs but not to set a easy over-ride.....???

Now you can edit the cupsd.conf to allow the adding and deleting of printers but you ether have to make an alias to the /System/Library/CoreServices/Printer Setup Utility.... or via 127.0.0.1:631 nether being ideal....

So some poking around with the /etc/authorization file provides the answer to this...

modifying the Rights > system.preferences > group from admin to everyone...

This has a couple of advantages ....

There are things that you dont want a standard user to be able to do with System Preferences... Accounts.... you dont want them to be able to create a new user (create a Admin user) create groups or promote themselves...

but there are things that you may want your users to be able to do .... Time Machine preferences.. Printing ....

Changing the above string will do just this and only this....

So to allow Standard Users to add / remove / reset printing....

edit the /etc/cups/cupsd.conf and remove or hash the lines;

# AuthType Default
# Require user @SYSTEM

# AuthType Default
# Require user @AUTHKEY(system.print.admin) @admin @lpadmin

edit the /etc/authorization

rights > system.preferences > group admin

to

rights > system.preferences > group everyone

Save files

turn into pkg for easy deployment....

Printing for Standard Users in Leopard now works.

There is a Freeware Tool called ReturnOpen at http://returnopen.com that will do the trick.
Actually it is nothing more than an Automator-wrapper for one command:

defaults write com.apple.Finder NSUserKeyEquivalents '{"Open" = "\r";}'

This uses the same mechanism as the Keyboard-Shortcut settings in System Preferences, so on non-english Systems you'll have to enter the localized name of your "Open" Menu-command of the Finder.

ReturnOpen therefore does not work on non-english Systems.

Network Question

At home I can't get your standard high speed internet. I have to use wireless broadband. It's not too bad except I am running into an issue with my macs. The wireless modem is setup as a router, and by default it hands out ip address in the 169.254.1.X range. The IP of the modem is 1.1, and it hands out 1.2-100 I think.

My windows machines seem to handle this fine, but my mac machines don't like the IPs its given. It see's it as a manual address. Sometimes it will take the address, and show as a problem in system proferences, but still work. But lately it hasn't been taking an address at all.

Is there anything I can do other then getting them to change the range of IPs the DHCP of their modem hands out. I don't have access to make those changes. I also don't want to hook another router before the modem to get around it either.. The macs should handle this, but I don't know why its not.

If these framework files are missing the share cannot be mapped.

I usualy manage firefox preferences by changing the application's defaults before the system imaging/distribution or the software deployment process. So every new user logging in for the first time pulls this settings by taking over my modified defaults.

You can do so by opening the firefox.app file and editing the files in:
firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/grepprefs/all.js

This is where most of the default settings of firefox are defined.

I used this method to change the default startpage and the search url as well as to change the settings to make firefox automaticaly discover the correct proxy settings.

To change the proxy settings to auto detect i changed the following line:
pref("network.proxy.type", 2);
to:
pref("network.proxy.type", 4);

Unfortunately this method deos not work for existing users which have allready started any version of firefox and therefore their userhome allready contains preference files for firefox.

WinClone Boot Camp Script

WinClone Script for PKGImage 1.1+

This script will restore a winclone image to your Intel Mac.

Set the size of Windows Volume for it to use

The path the script uses is "Share"/BootCamp/Untitled.winclone/winclone.perl

edit this to reflect your path on the server.

See WinClone's web site to find out more on creating a copy of your bootcamp drive.

check that the "Self Extract" ARD Option is on.

You will need to copy the two Perl Folders from your 10.5 system to your 10.5 netboot image.

copy /System/Library/Perl
copy /Library/Perl

to your Netboot Server Netinstall.dmg

I have been working on a BootCamp script for PKGImage this weekend...and ran in to a over looked problem.

The Scripts are not modular. Its on or off...

I could have the script lookup a MAC table to see if it should run but that sort of takes away the ease of the program.

So 1.1 Update due out this week with modular scripting.

It will be the same interface as you use to select packages but choose the scripts you want as part of the Config plist file.

The script for BootCamp is using WinClone http://www.twocanoes.com/winclone/ and using its ARD self extract function which works really well from PKGImage.

The only issue i have found is that Windows needs to run chkdisk on first re-boot.... So the Question: Does this need to run or can it be done silently?
